arebyte Gallery joined Offprint London 2016 to host London’s first ever Internet Yami-Ichi (Black Market) event at Tate Modern as part of Offprint London 2016. The fair will showcase up to 20 local and international artists working mainly in digital and net-based practices exploring the potential of online art IRL (In Real Life).
The Internet Yami-Ichi (Black Market) is a weekend flea market which deals with “Internet-ish” things, face-to-face, in actual space. Both flea markets and the Internet are fantastical and chaotic mixes of the amazing and the useless.
There are over 30 artists selling their work; from a limited edition artbook, that is an archive of Internet field recordings by Tadeo Sendon, Shinji Toya will sell CD-R's which has a dying website on it, a project developed for storage-un.it (part of arebyte's programme).People can also buy the selfie-cap, made by Christophe Cachelin, which is literally a hat that shows you yourself, all the time. Libby Heaney, who as a digital fortune-teller will be selling fortunes by using leaked data (that is used by large corporations and advertising companies) to try and modify our behaviour in the future by looking at what we’ve done in the past.
The Internet Yami-Ichi is a celebration, where together we experience the afterglow offline, as the “buzz” of the Internet wears off. After visiting Berlin, Brussels and Amsterdam, Linz, New York and more, Tate Modern in London will be the pinnacle of all Yami-Ichi’s.
