James B Stringer leads a series of two intermediate workshops exploring the real-time creative possibilities of the video game engine Unreal Engine 5, and how its video game development tools might be used within a fine art practice.
What will be covered?
Session 1: Breakables Gallery
Participants will create simple interactive breakable objects in Unreal Engine 5 by making a destructible virtual exhibition.
Session 2: Attenuation
Participants will use Unreal Engine as a performative audio tool by creating an unearthly musical instrument in Unreal Engine 5.
What will I achieve?
In Unreal Engine, you will create and import your own 3D assets, set up basic materials, and experiment with the physics engine to break and fracture 3D objects.
You will learn practical sound recording techniques, then import and play your recordings in Unreal Engine.
By the end of the series, you will have gained introductory knowledge of Unreal's physics, coding and audio systems and how they can all interact.
Do I need any particular skills?
This is an intermediate workshop series intended for people with some knowledge of 3D software, audio editing and the transfer of data from device to device.
